To run STATSGO DATA ANALYST:

1.Start ArcView, load the STATSGO extension by clicking on FILE and EXTENSIONS checking the STATSGO DATA ANALYST extension, you will see the short sentence description and check the box in front of the item, then click on OK. The splash screen of the STATSGO DATA ANALYST will appear for few seconds. That means you properly loaded the STATSGO extension.

2. The open wizard menu will appear on the screen. You can follow the menu to start a new project or open an existing STATSGO DATA ANALYST file. If the open wizard menu disappears, then you can start your new project in the pull-down menu in the menu bar on the top of your program screen. If you are not sure what to do at this point, then click on CANCEL button, it will take you one step back. If you want to proceed, click on NEXT.

3. Another menu will prompt you to select the CD drive. Be sure to select the correct CD drive for the STATSGO data. If you are incorrect, simply start again.

If you are unsure of your CDROM drive, then guess, if it is incorrect you will be prompted again
4. Another menu will prompt you to select the state of your interest for the further data analysis. Use the pull-down menu to select the state. The NEXT button is not active until you select a state. The BACK button will take you back a step back. If you have previously copied the spatial coverage (or shapefile) for the state (and comp and layer tables), then you can click the button under Non CD data.

5. As soon as you click on NEXT button the data is read from the CDROM. You will be prompted for a filename to copy the coverage to, as it must be edited. A Message Box will ask if you want to link the data tables at this point or not. You can click on YES for linking, or NO for unlinking. Because we need to use all the tables for data analysis clicking yes is recommended. If you prefer not to link the tables, then you can use the pull-down menu in STATSGO to link the tables at the appropriate time.

Non-Cdrom users will be presented with dialog boxes asking for coverage, comp table and layer table paths. Please supply them, if they are incorrect, the program will announce there has been an error, and you may start again. Once the data has been read into ArcView you will need to link the data. See Linking Data under View.

Continue to Analysis? YES

SAVING A STATSGO PROJECT

  1. Go to the Project Window.
  2. Find the 'Statsgo' menu. Pull-down and release on 'Save Statsgo Project As'
  3. Select the drive and directory to save the project to in the 'Save Statsgo Project As' dialog. Input a file name. STATSGO projects are saved with the extension *.stp. At this point '.stp' can be added to the file or left off. The program will know and append '.stp' if necessary. Example: proj1.stp is same as proj1
  4. Press 'OK'. The STATSGO project and the Arcview project are saved. If the statsgo project is proj1.stp, then the Arcview project will be proj1.apr. It is possible to overwrite files.

ONLY open STATSGO created *.apr files by using 'Existing Project' under 'Statsgo' in the project window.

OPENING AN EXISTING STATSGO PROJECT

  1. If the STATSGO Data Analyst Extension is not loaded, then load extension
  2. In the Project Window, release on 'Existing Project' under 'Statsgo'. (The 'Open Wizard' will appear if the extension was just loaded, press 'Existing Project' and press 'NEXT'.)
  3. Find the STATSGO Project file (*.stp), select and press 'OK'.
  4. Arcview will then open the STATSGO Project file (*.stp) and the corresponding Arcview Project file (*.apr).

WHAT IS THE *.STP FILE USED FOR? The *.stp file is used to hold settings from the previous STATSGO operating session. Settings such as linking, and all of the options from the 'Analysis Options' are saved to the *.stp file.

NEVER EDIT ANY *.STP FILE - IRREPRIBLE DAMAGE WILL OCCUR.

HOW DO I REMOVE THE STATSGO DATA ANALYST?

To remove the STATSGO Data Analyst (why would you want to do that?), simply open the Windows Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs, select STATSGO Data Analyst and Press ADD/REMOVE. All files except the *.avx file will be erased. To erase STATSGO.avx, use a file browser to migrate to ESRI>ARCVIEW>EXT32. Select Statsgo.avx and delete file (Be careful not to delete any other files!).
